Wood of Belleau

The Bois Belleau was a key First World War position and remains a hauting reminder of the bloody battles and horrors of that conflict.

Here can be seen the war graves of 2289 American servicemen, 251 of which belong to unknown soldiers.

The cemetery chapel was built on the very line of the trench that was dug by the American Second division after winning a battle here on June 25th, 1918, an outcome that had some bearing on the final victorious ending of the war.
